About your professor

More than twenty years teaching English, French, and Spanish

Elizabeth Levine, M.A., M.P.H., M.F.A., is a trilingual educator, translator, author, and editor. She has taught in university classrooms, schools, community programs, and private lessons — from middle- and high-school students preparing for school and AP exams to adults learning for travel, work, or the pleasure of it.

Each student begins with a conversation about goals and learning style, followed by a personal plan: grammar, conversation, reading, writing, pronunciation, and culture through literature, film, music, and current events. Adult and returning learners are especially welcome.

“It is important that students feel safe to make mistakes and learn from them in a non-judgmental, positive learning environment.”

Lesson planning and assessment

Sixth-grade French unit: Le Temps (The Weather)

A one-week unit in which students learn to describe the weather across the four seasons, building on vocabulary for the months of the year. Students practice dialogues in pairs, create their own flashcards, play a whole-class review game, and finish by designing and presenting their own French weather report — a graded project with a vocabulary quiz.

The plan weaves short formative check-ins throughout, so lessons can be adjusted before the final assessment, and includes differentiated support for students who need tasks broken into smaller steps.

Sample assessment: French 2 final exam

A final exam Elizabeth wrote for her French 2 students. It asks learners to read real-world materials — a weekly workout schedule, a daily timetable, a voicemail message — and answer in complete French sentences, alongside targeted grammar practice with verbs such as pouvoir and faire.

Shown as a sample of her assessment design; the full exam is not published.

Sample Spanish curriculum

A month of individualized learning

This sample curriculum was created for an intermediate adult learner. It combines spontaneous conversation, practical grammar, listening comprehension, adult vocabulary, and writing around the learner’s goals.

Conversational confidence

Daily life, high-frequency structures, listening, and short reflective writing.

Travel communication

Airport and hotel role-play, useful expressions, and formal commands.

Professional Spanish

Workplace conversation, meetings, voicemail responses, and professional email writing.

Culture & storytelling

Cultural fluency, cohesive narration, personal storytelling, and progress assessment.

Practice between lessons

The weekly plan includes ten minutes of daily conversation practice, short journal entries, and vocabulary review using spaced repetition. Listening tasks lead into spoken summaries, while reading supports practical writing such as travel recommendations and professional emails.

Reviewing progress

The month closes with a five-to-seven-minute speaking assessment and a two-to-three-paragraph personal narrative or cultural reflection, followed by a review of next steps and goals for continued learning.
